Job-hunting app matches candidates’ personalities with vacancies

Job hunting can be a daunting prospect – with the modern job market offering a variety of careers that can leave prospective applicants bewildered by the diverse choice on offer. In the past we’ve come across systems that simplify the process for employers, with sites such as Unrabble, and now we’ve come across something similar to help those looking for work. Apply App.ly makes job seeking less daunting by narrowing down the choice and matching candidates with vacancies, not only through previous professional experience, but also by personality type. From the creators: “The apartment rental experience is broken. Let’s fix it. With RentHackr, you’ll see how much apartments are currently rented for, use tools to discover track your best apartments and see ahead of time what apartments will be available.”
The site is already growing in NYC, but the best results have yet to come, because the more people who join, the better the system works. (via RentHackr: Find the Price of Apartments Nearby)

I love it when a startup comes along that shifts the balance of power back towards the consumer!

Dollar Shave Club
Clean shaven in this day and age comes with a price. A large one. The soaring cost of razors can make even the wealthiest of men feel uncomfortable with the outrageous prices. CEO and founder of Dollarshaveclub.com, Michael Durbin, has created the perfect business designed specifically to save you cash. With prices starting at just $1 a month, members of the club can have blades shipped to their house on a monthly basis. They’re stainless-steel baldes with a pivoting head and an Aloe Vera strip, so they’ll compete with the usual offerings from brands like Gillette and not the blue plastic throw-a-ways the skin on your face dreads.
There are many impressive things about the start-up: the copy is extremely well written, the branding is executed wonderfully, the web design is nearly perfect and its message video will get more laughs than any commercial in recent history. Sign up here. — Jack Archer.

This is an awesome service for those of you who don’t like to use electric razors.

The things we fear are probably feared by others, and when we avoid them, we’re doing what others are doing as well. Which is why there’s a scarcity of whatever work it is we’re avoiding. And of course, scarcity often creates value. The shortcut is simple: if you’re afraid of something, of putting yourself out there, of creating a kind of connection or a promise, that’s a clue that you’re on the right track. Go, do that.

Seth’s Blog: Fear, scarcity and value

Awesome thoughts from Seth. Do what others are afraid to do.

Dismissing an idea is so easy because it doesn’t involve any work. You can scoff at it. You can ignore it. You can puff some smoke at it. That’s easy. The hard thing to do is protect it, think about it, let it marinate, explore it, riff on it, and try it. The right idea could start out life as the wrong idea.

Give it five minutes - (37signals)

Such important advice.

Everything that is a big deal today was once unknown.
Just because people aren’t paying attention to what you’re doing now doesn’t mean they won’t take notice at some point.  Keep at it, and great things can happen.

Q:Would you mind explaining BankSimple a bit more? It sounds interesting yet I'm nervous about moving money.

rectifiedspirit

Basically, BankSimple (now known as “Simple”) is letting FDIC insured institutions handle the responsibility and compliance involved with holding bank deposits, which is extremely time consuming for a company.  This frees them up to focus on the user experience.  This means better customer service, user interface, and budgeting tools.

I’m not convinced that anyone should move all of their banking there, but I’m keeping an eye on them and hoping it’s successful.

Cake Health Makes Sense of Your Health Insurance and Benefits
Think of this as the Mint.com of your health insurance benefits.  It keeps track of benefits, claims, and it even reminds you to schedule that annual eye exam.  Bottom line, it’s going to help you make the most of your health insurance plan.

Ditch your 401(k) for vodka and habaneros?

Don Poffenroth spent more than 20 years watching his 401(k) eke out returns of 3% to 5%. Until, in 2007,he decided to take a bold step: He emptied out his 401(k) into a self-directed IRA and funneled all of his savings — $300,000 — into a vodka distillery.
