Step 161: Understand your health insurance before there is an emergency

Pop quiz, hotshots: What’s your deductible? What is a deductible, anyway? Do you have an HMO or PPO? What’s your coinsurance? What is coinsurance?

I won’t lie: whenever I research my health insurance, I get angry at the entire institution. But this righteous anger is not helpful. I will strike zero blows against the health care monolith by remaining ignorant as to what, exactly, I am covered for.

So know the ins and outs for your policy specifically. And have the ability to pay for your deductible, should it come to that. Here is a cheat sheet on basic health insurance terms, for those who could use a refresher.
