Q:I think the thing about Turbo Tax being free is this: If it's JUST a W-2, it's free from start to finish. You can then print out the form and stick it in an envelope and mail it. They don't charge you for that. If you have a 1099 or other stuff, I'm fairly certain you have to pay more. E-Filing has a charge, too. I don't know about the 1099 stuff because when I switched from W-2 to 1099 I switched to HR Block which has saved me thousands in tax exemptions. They know their stuff.
More clarification from garrettmickley. I’ve used H&R Block online myself for the past few years and have been really happy with it.
